Golf is a fun sport with its own terminology like most other sports. The following is a list of important terms with brief explanations that you can keep on your phone for an easy reference:
PAR – Par is referred to how many strokes a golfer is expected to need to complete the play for one hole, or a course. Most holes are between Par 3-5. A 18 holes, Par 72 course needs to average Par 4 per hole. 18 x 4 = 72.
HANDICAP – The most common question asked with new golf acquaintances is “what’s you “handicap”? Basically all courses have a number of strokes to complete at highest levels. Most good 18 hole courses are between 70-72 strokes. With a 70 par course, if you take 90 strokes to complete the course, you are 20 over par for the course. Though a pro may come in 4 over par, it is highly unlikely for most golfers to play lower than 18 over par. Most casual golfers will finish 10-40 over par, usually 28 or more over. The number of golfers who shoot under par is less than half a percent. Most golfers carry a score book keeping track of their scores to help determine and improve their handicap. The main thing is to enjoy and be around fun people.
BIRDIE – A score of one under par for a hole. If the hole is par-4 and you complete it in 3 strokes.
EAGLE – A score of two under par for a hole. If the hole is par-5 and you complete it in 3 strokes.
DOUBLE EAGLE or ALBATROSS – A score three under par, which is very rare.
BOGEY – Is one hole over par on an individual hole. If the hole is par – 5 and you complete in 6 strokes.
DOUBLE BOGEY – 2-over par. You are starting to get it now.
TRPPLE BOGEY 2=over par.
ACE – HOLE-IN-ONE – When you complete the hole in one stroke. Though rare, some get them more often than others.
